Tell us a little about yourself with a focus on what motivates you.

I am motivated by the impact that innovation has on people. It excites me that we can accomplish so many great things with cutting-edge technologies. Entrepreneurship and innovation drive the world forward and I am excited to be a part of that.

When did you establish your company and where did the idea originate?

Radial3DRadial3D was established in December, 2016. The idea originated from Dr. Scott Lozanoff, who built successful IOS medical imaging software in the past. We realized the huge potential for medical imaging software that was accessible on all platforms and easy to use.

Typically, medical imaging software is a native application used only by highly trained specialists. Now new technologies, such as VR, WebGL2 and the 3Dweb, can deliver powerful 3D medical imaging content on any device via the web. We are also launching support for VR devices on day one.

What need or needs does your company seek to fill for its customers?

Our customers struggle with the need to collaborate and engage with the complex medical problems they deal with every day. They struggle to visualize the problem and clearly communicate that problem to others.

What is the one thing that sets your company apart from its competitors?

What was the biggest challenge you faced while getting your company up and running, and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge I faced was clearly defining our early adopters. Radial3D could have started with many markets. We actually started off with dentists, but saw a stronger need from the healthcare education and training market. This market was willing to pay today compared to the dentists who would most likely pay years from today. We found this by getting out of the building and talking to hundreds of potential customers early on, as Steve Blank said.

What resources have you utilized that other founders might find compelling or useful?

Radial3DWe graduated from YC startup school, a free MOOC put on by YC. There is no equity given; however, you get one-on-one mentorship with YC alum that have much experience. We also graduated from XLR8UH, a world-class accelerator program out of the University of Hawaii. They offered us funding, mentorship, AWS, Clerky, and other startup software perks. Lastpass.com has also been a life-saver for us in organizing and on-boarding.

We also took 2nd place in the University of Hawaii Business Plan Competition. Business plan competitions offer free money and resources to startups. I encourage others to take advantage of this if they are still in college.

What steps have you taken to secure funding for your company and what, if anything, would you do differently if you had to start over?

Radial3D started off with a world class team. This helped us immensely. Many of our early investors stated that they were betting on the horse and not the race. They trusted that we were a smart team that would eventually figure things out and we did.

The only thing I wish we did differently is to have started building product earlier so we could launch sooner.

What questions have you had as an entrepreneur of a fledgling startup that you had a particularly hard time finding the answers to?

Many startup events in the community seem worthwhile, but sometimes end up being a total waste of time. It is hard to find out if an event is worth your time before attending. As an entrepreneur, time is your most valuable resource. Wasting time can kill your company.

What is the most helpful tip or “hack” you’ve ever learned, stumbled across, or been given?

Do not be afraid to ask for help. There is no such thing as a stupid question.
